After the Wuchang Uprising in 1911, the united force of Jiangsu and Zhejiang captured Nanjing on December 2 and the Chief of the united force Xu Shaozhen had contributed considerably to the victory. In 1912, Sun Yat-Sen took office as the Provisional President of Republic of China and appointed Xu Shaozhen as the Nanjing garrison Commandant.
