The North China Herald was originated by the Englishman Honry
Shearman with others, which published the first issue on August 1, 1850 and was
the first English newspaper published in Shanghai.
After the publication of the English daily of North-China Daily News in
July 1864, the North China Herald became its weekly supplement, which
was published every Saturday. It mainly included the announcement, circular
order, comment, regulations and minutes of the consulates and Shanghai
Municipal Council, as well as the advertisements, business tendering, shipping,
post and telecommunications news. The Announcement made by the Shanghai Dagger
Society was also published in the newspaper in 1853. It stopped the publication
in 1941 when the Pacific War broke out. It was the foreign language newspaper
of Shanghai of
the longest history.
